We are, as you know, discussing various changes out here, and I have suggested to the Governing Body, of whom Sir John Carrington (a friend of yours, I believe) is a member, that we should if possible cndeavour to secure the services of an Oxford Graduate.
This has been approved by His Excellency the Governor, and I have been instructed to ask of you the favour that you would jointly with Mr.H.T. Gerrans nominate to the Secretary of State for the Colonies at Downing Street a man whom you would recommend for the post.
What we chiefly require is a healthy cheerfully disposed young man, a Graduate of moderate attainments (the higher the better) who will take a personal interest in his Chinese day scholars, and be free from race prejudice, which is fatal to success in teaching natives.
